Opened in 2025, Vila Catena is a unique space on the Bucharest art space, bringing together complementary approaches to modern and contemporary art. The Museum Pavilion presents the AVARTE Collection, bringing to the forefront works of the great masters of modern art in Romania: Nicolae Grigorescu, Theodor Pallady, Nicolae Tonitza, Gheorghe Petrașcu, Ștefan Luchian. At the same time, through contemporary art inserts and a friendly approach, Vila Catena becomes a living space, actively involved in the art scene of the city, generating a warm formula for understanding art. The Contemporary Pavilion develops an exhibition program in collaboration with the Sandwich Gallery, focusing on thematic group exhibitions.
The first exhibitions, opened in April 2025, were Theodor Pallady: Readings and Color (Lecturi și Culoare – Museum Pavilion), Cats Are Taking Over (Contemporary Pavilion) and Daniela Făiniş – Vegetativa (permanent exhibition in the Arcade space, -1).
Through this joint initiative, the Fildas Art Foundation – through the Catena for Art program – and Sandwich open a new invigorating dialog between the public and the art, highlighting a monumental building and questioning, with humor and a critical spirit, how we relate to the exhibition spaces and
the art in general.
This autumn, Vila Catena is hosting two remarkable exhibitions that engage in dialogue through their shared theme of personal space and the idea of “home.”
In the Museum Pavilion, the exhibition “Nicolae Grigorescu – ACASĂ (AT HOME)” brings together works from the AVARTE Collection, highlighting the intimate universe of the great Romanian painter. His warm landscapes, luminous interiors, and vivid characters weave a story about simplicity, serenity, and roots.
In parallel, the Contemporary Pavilion presents the group exhibition “HOME,” curated by Galeria Sandwich, which explores—through the works of more than thirty Romanian and international artists—what “home” means today: the place, the emotion, the objects, and the memories that define us.
Together, these two exhibitions enrich Vila Catena’s mission: to bring art closer to people, within a space where beauty becomes part of everyday life.
