CATENA received the Special Award for the quality of the supply regarding the health of family and children at the Brands for Kids by Forbes 2015 Gala

Brands for Kids by Forbes 2015 Gala awarded on December 8, all those brands that have earned, through the quality they offer and the trust they transmit, a special place in the choice of the demanding parents, lovers of quality.

Because to manufacture and to put up for sale any product for children is not only a business, but also an act of immense social responsibility, Forbes gave the opportunity to explore the universe of the products designed for the children and to present to you, as part of in this event, those products which best meet the criteria of quality and trust.

Thus, Forbes magazine and the company D & D Research conducted, based on the answers of 1,000 mothers, a Top of trust, which can be the starting signal of a different kind of competition: the competition of accountability and suitability for the Romanian family requirements.

Forbes Romania recognized and awarded as part of the Brands for Kids 2015 Gala held at the Athénée Palace Hilton, the top 16 brands in the rankings resulting from this research and presented the successful businesses that stand behind these brands.

The 16 names of awarded products or companies were voted by 1,000 women, mothers in urban areas, from cities with more than 50,000 residents and aged between 22 and 35 years.

The research that underlay this Award Gala was an initiative of Forbes Romania and it was coordinated on three areas: quality, reliability and safety.

The participants in the study were asked to specify which products they use for their child, to name the brand they trust for each category of products, to say which brand is the safest for the baby and to name the brand with the highest quality level in each category.

The purpose underlying this concept was to help the mothers in Romania with quality references and recommendations from the world of baby products, the manufacture and sale of which is not only a business but also an act of huge social responsibility.

Forbes Romania has recognized and honored as such the top 16 brands in the rankings resulting from this research and presented successful businesses that stand behind these names.

CATENA, represented at Brands Gala for Kids by Forbes 2015 by Anca Vlad, President of FILDAS and CATENA Group, and by Otilia Ostroţki, director of TONICA Group, was awarded the Special Prize for the quality of the supply related to family and children health. The trophy was handed to Mrs. Anca Vlad who stressed the importance of this award also by the fact that the majority of the employees of the CATENA pharmacies are mothers, and that 200 children were born only in 2015.

Spirit, expression and ideal of Civil Romania

Yesterday, Thursday, December 3, 2015, the opening of the photo exhibition “Civil Romania. Spirit and Expression” took place, a special event held at SENSO Art Gallery (Bd. Unirii nr. 15, Sector 5, Bucharest). The exhibition presents over 60 photographs shot by Marcel Sebastian Oros during the events that took place after the fateful night at “#colectiv” and the 23 photographs of the late Teodora Maftei, reunited under the title “The London Unedited”, images shot by the journalist in London in the summer of 2015.

When, immediately after the fateful night of October 30, I started, together with my colleagues, the project “Civil Romania”, I felt, I wanted and I knew that we need to mobilize us as well as possible. I wanted we to get involved, to try to make known every action and initiative that succeeds quickly, to take the pulse of University Square and be part of the spirit of the young people, but also the spirit of those who were aged as their parents and even their grandparents, to reflect as many as possible cultural and artistic events and events dedicated to the tragedy that took place at #colectiv. All of them, though so different, aimed, especially then, to help the victims. And we succeeded! But we very quickly realized that this project is and will be one without borders, not definable in time and space, but dedicated to the civil society here and elsewhere.

Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest

The sixth edition of “Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest” festival, also supported by Catena, takes place between October 23 and 29 at Cinema Studio, Cinema Elvire Popesco and CinemaPRO.

fcbMr Tudor Reu, one of the event organisers, declared: Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest is a festival initiated by director Cristian Mungiu in 2010, together with the general delegate of the Cannes Festival, Thierry Fremaux. It started as an idea to bring over to the Romanian public the films awarded at Cannes which, in those days, had a significantly smaller distribution rate in our country. Every year, the number of films increased, as did the number of guests, which led us to have once again this year, as a guest at Films de Cannes, the Palme d’Or winner, who will come and present their film for the first time in Bucharest, on October 25, at Cinema Studio. The three cinemas which will run the movies are Studio, Elvire Popesco of the French Institute, which is also our traditional partner in organising Les Filmes de Cannes, and Cinema Pro. For the past few years, we have been enhancing the idea of a simple Cannes movie showcase towards a more complex cinematographic manifestation, comprising debates, workshops and master classes held by the guests. The main guests are: Jacques Audiard, the latest winner of Palme d’Or, who will come, present his film for the first time and hold a master class at the University of Theatre and Film; actress Emanuelle Bercot, who won the award for best actress at Cannes this year, but who opened the Festival with the film that she directed and will also open Les Filmes de Cannes in Bucharest with the same film; the Croatian director Dalibor Matanic and the general delegate of the Cannes Festival, Thierry Fremaux, who will close the festival with a novel event, the films of the Lumiere brothers, which he restored and will present for one hour and a half on the stage, accompanied by his own commentaries in English.”

Across a five-year span, Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest has become one of the most ample cultural events in the Capital city. Last year it brought more than 14,000 spectators in the cine halls, numerous films were run with all tickets sold out, whereas almost half the total number of tickets were purchased prior to the commencement of the festival. Upon the request of the audience, additional projections were organised, after its conclusion. In October, Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest shall bring tenths of films for the very first time in Romania, with over 100 projections, some of them scheduled to run in the presence of film-makers, master classes, round tables, retrospectives and other special events.

This year, Catena is a proud supporter of the event, as it chooses to do whenever artists and their initiatives, activities and works are in the limelight.

CATENA at ZF Pharma Summit ’15

In her capacity as CEO of CATENA, Alina Marinescu was invited to hold a speech at ZF Pharma Summit ’15, an event that lasted for two days and was organized by the newspaper Ziarul Financiar at the World Trade Center Bucharest, New York room. Here are some excerpts from the speech:

“Thank you for the invitation. I want to congratulate you that you were able to gather at the table all the players in the health system: manufacturers, distributors, pharmacists, hospitals, law firms and foreign partners.

Catena is a chain of pharmacies in Romania with hundred percent Romanian capital, which has grown in recent years through the acquisition of pharmacies in the pharmaceutical market. What we want is a consolidated development, both for us and for the system. We believe that if we will have a predictable health system, with laws to be applied by everyone, implemented on time, not after I do not know how many years, it will be good for everyone.

“No one took into account the effects that the price change can generate.”

Look at the price changes: it was a measure highly acclaimed by the media at that time, considered very good for the patient. But no one took into account the effects it may cause. I think we must go toward a health system in which the patient is on the first place. I think that all of us, the players on the pharmaceutical market and on the health system market, we had in the foreground the patient. Everything that was done was done for the patient, so that the patient to have access to good medicines, to cheap medicines, as it was desired, to be the country with the cheapest medicinal products, but we have never thought if we could ensure the continuity of the treatment and reap the results of investments made in years. Currently, there are quite many medicines that are difficult to be found. I mean usual medicines, I do not speak now of expensive drugs, to which a limited number of health insured persons would have access. I’m talking about medicines that are needed by a large number of insured persons. We find them increasingly difficult, the manufacturers have their reasons for not producing them, they do not bring them any more, or they bring them in limited quantities, the distributors receive inadequate quantities and can not meet the orders from all the pharmacies. And then we, as pharmacists, are forced to refuse the patients and to give them alternatives permitted by law, under compensated and free recipes, which are more expensive and for the patient this means additional costs.

It was a quite high grief among the patients on July 1, when everyone said that the medicines will become cheaper, but when, in reality, in the pharmacies, for certain therapies and certain types of medications, they had to pay more than they used to formerly pay. And it was due to the referencing, due to the fact that product that gave the reference price was not available, and this happened because neither the manufacturers, nor the distributors, were ready to bring in pharmacies the necessary quantities, due to various reasons. This measure to reduce the prices, whether it was good or not good, must be applied. Probably it had to be adjusted to what it happened in 2015, not to what happened in 2009. Perhaps, if it was updated in 2009, 2010, another was the impact.

“Competition makes you innovative”

Regarding bankruptcies … it is likely that they will appear, it is likely that many pharmacies will better manage their financial resources, will much better manage their storing capabilities … I cannot make now a prediction about how many bankruptcies will also be and about what will happen … We clearly do not want to fail. I believe that in a free market the competition is needed and the competition makes you innovative.

To move forward, we believe transparency is needed at all levels. We, as pharmacy, report in the Insurance House system the items we deliver at every moment. I believe that when the Insurance House will ensure transparency with respect to everything that is consumed, to everything that is settled, with respect to whom and how and why is settled, a lot of these frauds about which they speaks in the system would be eliminated, the money also would probably be consumed more thoughtfully and we would not be obliged to find funds from the clawback tax, from the reduction in prices, and we would have enough money to finance the system. The Insurance Houses, through the reporting made by the pharmacies, know at any time what was released. They know, for each area of the country, which is the specific prescription, which is the incidence of diseases, and can make various statistics: why, in I do not-know-what county a more expensive treatment scheme is used for the cardio-vascular diseases and why, possibly, in the south of the country another scheme is used. The therapeutic guidelines the system needs can be compiled much better so that we can all go in the same direction.

“The introduction of the health card is a very good measure”

The introduction of the health card was a very good measure, which we, the pharmacies, expected to be introduced even in December 2014. Finally, it became operational on 1 September. I repeat, it is a very good measure, which needs to be improved so that no more misfires to occur, the system not to stop any more, because we still live in the era of reporting system stopping… This health card will give us a clear picture of what happens in the consumption of medicines. I speak only of medicines but the health card is used on hospital services, the labs, the offices of family doctors … A literally extraordinary measure, that must be perfected, that must be implemented with much more involvement by the officials, and here I believe it would be necessary a much better training of the insured, I wouldn’t like to talk about the patient. Until we reach to use medicines, we all are insured of the health system. I think that if explanation would have been given to the insured why it is necessary they to go in time to take the card, if they have not received it, we wouldn’t have witnessed these queues formed at the Insurance Houses, these inconveniences that occur in the Pharmacy when people come and they are told that the system cannot be validated in the absence of the card. I think that if the insured would be much better trained, with everything that happens in the system, things would go much better. But I think transparency is needed, I insist on transparency. When the Romanian insured will know on what his money is consumed, I think he will trust, will appreciate much more medical services, pharmaceutical services offered in Romania and I think that the dream could be realized our health system to become a health system that does not export patients, but receives patients.

Our system is a highly regulated system, but I think that not all the regulations that underlie a business are joined together … When the price of a product is reduced, if it is reduced by the Ministry of Health, the pharmacies and the distributors are obliged to reduce the said price also for what they have in stock. This means you bought the item with RON 1 and you sell it with RON 0.50. And in that moment, it is a loss on stock that is supported by every pharmacy, every distributor…

“The matter of the medicines exit from this country can be solved through transparency”

Regarding the medicines that exit from this country, I think this matter will also be resolved through transparency. From what I know, distributors and manufacturers report to the National Agency for Medicines everything that is produced and everything that is imported. In their turn, all the distributors report to the National Agency for Medicines all the outputs from the warehouses. I think that, by a control made between input and output, we can greatly reduce these exports, which, because Romania is a European Union member, is legal. There were Distributors fined by the Competition Council that, I do not know how many years ago, they failed to export. Therefore I say: legislation at all levels – health, pharmacy, Competition Council, taxes – must be harmonized. We, even we are a chain, and even if everyone makes the difference between chain pharmacies and independent pharmacies, currently we are, as all the pharmacies throughout Romania, affected by the lack of medicines. I do not think a manufacturing company exists, which wouldn’t have a defective product in pharmacies, which cannot be offered to the patient.

With respect to the financial projections, I think for 2015, because of what is happening from July onwards, it is premature to set a figure, everyone wants to grow. Due to the legal conditions, the economic conditions, due to the fact that since July, the market is in place, as addressability by the patients, I think that one cannot make a very clear prediction. Currently, some grow, others decline, I want to grow. The privatization of health services is at the beginning. We started it in ’99, and since then we grow and grow, and now we are on a consolidated growth. This year, we bought few pharmacies and paid fewer for licenses on pharmaceuticals, around 50 thousand, but we paid a lot in the last years. The trend is towards decreasing, it is possible the same no longer be purchased, simply to close.

“We need profits to reinvest”

Steps to accommodate the new prices have been taken ever since we learned about it, besides the fact that we expected the price to be changed in April but the change was made in July and we remained quite cautious regarding the stocks. We look forward to changes; a year-end with changes in margins is announced, both for distributors and for pharmacies. We must be aware that if it is well for the distributors, also for the pharmacies is well. And for the producers, obviously will be well. Perhaps the word “profit” is hated by everyone because it originated from “to profit of something”. But I think that we should all be aware that we need to realize these profits in order to reinvest it. I do not think any big player in the market left with the profits to Bahamas. I think that the same were reinvested in personnel, in facilities, in improvements, in everything it is need to be a professional pharmaceutical system.

“From October 1 a new list of compensation will come into force”

From October 1, a new list of compensation will come into force. I think it will be difficult, because you have to tell the patient that until now, for certain categories of patients, the state compensated 90% and the patient paid just 10% of the reference price, and now you must tell the patient that the state only compensates 20% and that the patient will have to pay 80%. Or 70% more, or 40% more. Not to say there are 17 molecules that will not be compensated, so they will not be found any more and will not be allowed to be released starting from October 1. These are everyday medicines … The 17 medicines were taken off internationally, it was considered that these molecules cannot be compensated, but they are molecules that are used by quite many patients. They are molecules pretty much sold in pharmacies, they are sought. As part of a molecule, there are cheap products and expensive products. The compensation is made at the level of the molecule, not at the level of the product. “

The “Pharmacy of the heart” Catena – 16 years together with the Romanians

In 1999, when the Romanian group Fildas started the brand Catena, the mission was to offer the Romanians a network of pharmacies that would do more than sell drugs, they would offer the patients professional advice and recommendations for a wide variety of pharmaceutical, cosmetics, dermatocosmetics,  natural remedy and nutrition products. A network of pharmacies that will stand together with the Romanians and would reach their hearts.

In the 16 years of operation, Catena – an authentic Romanian brand – managed to become the largest and most loved network of pharmacies from Romania, with more than 550 units at a national level, serving millions of patient and thus fully contributing to the main mission of Fildas – to promote Health in Romania. As such, 1 in 4 Romanians currently shops at Catena – according to a qualitative study conducted by the Research and consultancy company Exact in July 2015.

The “Pharmacy of the heart” is the “Pharmacy of all Romanians”, offering prompt answers to their needs, and at the same time reaching very important criteria for the Catena brand, like proximity, good prices and a wide variety of products. These were just some of the reasons why patients voted repeatedly for Catena as the “Preferred pharmacy of the Romanians” or the pharmaceutical brand they trust the most.

And indeed, nothing would have been possible without the trust that Catena received, all this time, from the tens of millions of people that visited it. A trust earned in time which crowned the desire Catena had to always be a pharmacy close to the people – both by the permanent development of the pharmacy network, and by the social actions, informing campaigns and offers for a wide variety of products, meant to prevent the most common diseases and promote a healthy life style.

Catena rewarded each year the fidelity of its patients with attractive prizes offered during the campaigns that became a tradition.

And now, after 16 years, Catena offers another sign of its gratitude: A discount of 16% for prescriptions for seniors and students that have fidelity cards. The new Catena campaign supports again its patients, its loyal customers.

And all this because “If you have next to you the right one, age is just a number”, Catena – regardless of the number of years it celebrates – offers to its clients, permanently, the highest level of services.

The flexibility of the employment market – a necessity for Romania

Just like Romania, other states employ criteria to establish the dependence or independence of the activities, but most of these countries also come with the solution of regulating the status of „dependent self employed” – DSE, which is not one of an employee, but lies at the border between employee and „self employed”, as a result a type of “hybrid”. France, Germany, Italy have defined and regulated „dependent self employed” in various ways. Austria defined 3 categories of dependent self employed.

In Romania, according to an European study of 2013, consisting of 126 pages, dedicated to the analysis of dependent self employed persons, we have the most inflexible work contract market. As such, we have only half of the percentage of part-time employees compared to Europe, and just 1.5% temporary employees from an average of 14% in the EU (probably the ones during the trial period, after which the contract can be terminated practically just from the initiative of the employee).

On this basis was developed the self employed category, which exceeded by 3.5% the European average of 14.4%. It was a useful compensation and required for the economy, the engine of development and a source of future employers.

By deciding to eliminate the exception the dependent self employed category was practically destroyed. This will lead to a turmoil on the market, the despair of those that can not find an employer right away – because we understand the short time interval allowed for the transition from a DSE to the employee is very short, and then comes the “re-qualification”.

We must say that this is not about the taxation level. We understand that negotiations are undertaken to increase them and create a ceiling of 3 average wages for CAS and CASS, which would lead to a significant contribution for the state budget. It regards the retaining of an independence status agreed between the provider and the beneficiary when seeking the freedom from the troubles of a “job description” and the transfer of the professional responsibility and the “risks of the job” to the provider.

ROMANIA 25 YEARS

Growing a business requires tenacity and the ability to adapt

Dialogues with Anca Vlad, founder of the Fildas Group

Source: Revista Piata Financiara, special issue “Romania dupa 25 de ani”

We have the pleasure of talking with one of the most powerful business women from Romania, Anca Vlad, founder of the Fildas-Catena Group and one of the few women from Eastern Europe included in the organization Leading Women Entrepreneurs of the World. Extremely pleasant, with a positive attitude and the posture of a person deeply involved in what is her career and the family life, she reveals to us what these last 25 years, that marked Romania, meant to her. She started to build her career ever since graduating from college, working as a export department leader for the company Silvarom. In 1987 she had the opportunity to work at the Chamber of commerce of Romania, as the national representative for SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals, from Great Britain. After the Revolution, she decided to leave the state sector and, sensing the opportunity, she started the first consultancy company from Romania. In 1991 she started Fildas, with 7 employees and, later, in 199, the Catena network. Catena and Fildas are now a yearly business of 350 million EUR and with more than 3200 employees. The road to here was not easy at all.

Special event during the days of the Revolution

For Anca Vlad, the revolution of December 1989 is closely connected to a personal event: On December 25 her marriage was scheduled. She still recalls how, in those troubled days, in the week prior to the fall of the dictator, she was running at the seamstress, to try on her wedding dress. “The seamstress was gone. I was seeing people buying bread, because during 16-22 December it was not clear what was happening, but people were buying bread and canned goods. There was something in the air”, tells Anca Vlad. On December 22 she was scheduled to take the exam for her driver license, but this, of course, was not held. The wedding also did not take place, and not just because a large part of the guests no longer wanted to come, but because the church, and restaurant were closed those days. “We still managed to get to the Family Registry on December 25th. I remember that we simply walked on bullets. I could not find any flowers, just a clump of mistletoe – this is how the new era started for me”. But the mistletoe brought good luck.

Huge hopes

She remembers the huge joy she felt when the dictatorship of Nicolae Ceausescu was over. She admits that, from a material perspective, she was not doing that bad, but she felt something was missing: “I was 33 years old, I had a good income, entrepreneurial spirit, I was teaching French and English, I was translating. From a material perspective, I had no problems, but from the perspective of the freedom of speech and the freedom to travel, we were just caged birds. The communist evil was gone! Our life changed completely then, but so did our expectations. Our hopes were huge!”.

She recalls the first elections and it seemed normal to get completely away from the communism. “That felt like our only hope. I was looking at the people waiting in line to vote and I was thinking they must know what to vote for. But now I realize I was optimistic. Great changes can not come overnight, a transitional period was needed”. It just seems like Romania never left the transition. “Maybe this is our life, as Romanians, in eternal transition, with a very, very troubled history. We all dreamt and we were promised that we will join the world, Europe. This was not fully achieved. But it is not just our fault, it is also the discrimination that plagues our continent”, says Anca Vlad.

She waited 6 months for the first client

The start of the entrepreneurial career is connected, strangely, with the wedding. She raised some money for it, but, since it never took place, she had the money to start the first business and buy the furniture for her first registered office of her first company: A library, several fancy desks, a copier, a fax. The company had the registration number 800, being the first marketing and consulting company from Romania. “I studied English in high school and was fluent in the language, I had ties to the drugs domain, I always worked at the drug festivals from Romania as a translator, organizer, and it seemed logical to pursue this. My mother in law said that I might have been the first unemployed person in Romania.” And this is because the start was rough: 6 months went by before I found my first client and first contract. But the contract was for 3000 British pounds per month, and this gave her hope.

“Then the second client came, then a third, and pretty soon I had contracts for 10,000 pounds per month. And in the second year of activity I started the trading part, because the market was asking for this, and the sums from commissions were interesting, enough to be able to develop”. She recalls that back then, there was no VAT, only a tax of 2% for the circulation of goods. She says a company could operate without having to pay huge sums in advance to the state, but the taxes were very high:  At one points they reached a total of 55%.

How is the life of an entrepreneur? “Every day has its potential, you will meet people, you will read something interesting, you will get an idea to work with, so life can be beautiful, because you can create, like an artist. Obviously, there are multiple difficulties, but even an artist has trouble getting his art understood and appreciated.

There was a steady increase, in 25 years: From zero to a million, to two million, to five, to seven, to seventeen, to twenty five millions. It is the woman style of running a business, brick by brick. The growth means tenacity and ability to adapt, because we, the Romanian entrepreneurs, faced so many governments, so many types of laws, so many waves… and I had to keep the boat afloat and on the right heading. And my boat was growing, from 7 people, to 50, to 100, and now to more than 3000 employees. We have a lot of clients, a lot of providers for goods and services that depend on us and provide for us. But I can say that my entrepreneurial dream has come through.

The main problem was the financing

When she started her business Romania enjoyed a huge sympathy. But this did not last long. “After the Revolution people appreciated our bravery, the fact that we managed to overthrow a dictatorship. But then so things happened that first created a misunderstanding and then contempt for Romania, and this because we could not solve some social issues. The lack of sympathy led to a major reserve when it came to granting loans to our companies, up until 2002”, says the founder of the Fildas group. 12 years passed, and during this time local companies could not develop, because the banks were only giving loans to state companies and foreign companies. “The main problem of Romanian entrepreneurs was the lack of financing, especially since the state did not pay his debts in time. With regard to Fildas, I managed to transmit to the partners I started this business with, a strong sense of trust. They liked this linearity of the group, they considered we have a solid business and they gave us goods on loan”.

The loans really took off in 2007, anticipating the crisis. “We received some new loan proposals and we accepted because we needed them. The crisis was brutal, we faced many insolvencies from our partners, many from invoices not being paid by the state. It was hard for us too. We had major problems with the bank loans and the devaluation of the leu. And the fact that the state delayed payment to the providers for almost a year and did not reevaluate the exchange rate, while we worked with a fixed price for drugs, made us lose a lot. For 2-3 years we struggled”, admits Anca Vlad. In that unfavorable economical context, Fildas was at a standstill. Catena, did not feel the crisis the same way, because it was a new business, and new businesses gained during that crisis time, says Anca Vlad.

We should show ourselves in Europe as what we are: A proud nation, with talented people; we have a history, we have intellectual abilities. We can not accept to be hit, and I for example, to lose points at the grading companies by 30%, for the same numbers, same business, just because I am Romanian. Romania is a country of smart people, a country of art and beauty, a country with a history. Romania is a country with extraordinary perspectives.

Lessons of the crisis

The crisis taught Anca Vlad to stop planning for the long term. The Group budgets are now for a year, the business plans for six months, and the bank contracts, for three years, especially given that the banks no longer want longer periods. With regard to the business plan, it is focused on development. “We are the strongest pharmacy chain in Romania, and for the distribution we have a honorable third place. In this context, there is a need for a generation exchange, for the company to move forward, to maintain its position when facing the multitude of quakes in the economy and in a strong concurrency environment. We constantly renew our personnel, so we always have young managers, so that we have someone to carry on our dream. We were part of a generation, and now we a forming a new generation, and we get good results. The generation exchange is already ensured”, says the founder of the Fildas group.

The young graduates are not focused on entrepreneurship

Sadly, says Anca Vlad, the young graduates are not focused on entrepreneurship. And this is not their fault, it is the fault of the Romanian education system. For example, the British education system, prepares kids to become entrepreneurs at 18 years of age, and starting from high school economy and business are two classes that receive a good focus. “I am surprised that the Romanian education system did not evolve in this direction and that today, as a high school graduate, you learn nothing for this. Sometimes, what you have to do, does not require a college degree.” She thinks that the school does not prepare these youths for the challenges of working in a real company. “It is not their fault for not knowing, it is the fault of their teachers. They have no practical skills, because there are no practical classes, but they learn fast and are willing to learn. They have the whole future ahead of them, it would be a shame to become just a source of labor”, says Anca Vlad.

The laws should be rewritten

She thinks that the laws are cumbersome, thick and unpredictable, and should be rewritten, especially the economy laws. “The laws are impossible to read, even if they should have a familiar language, because they are made for us, the citizens, to help us, not to confuse us. I have a law “translator”, because in each law there are references to seven other prior laws. If the point is not to breach them, they should be very clear. The state should do something to gain our trust.”

The economical potential or Romania: IT and agriculture

She thinks there are two domains in which Romania has a huge potential: IT and agriculture. “God gave us the best options to have a performing agriculture, but this requires industrialization. On the other side, we should develop the IT abilities, especially for the workforce. The young talents, emerging from the specialty schools should be encouraged, because around them you can form teams that will truly bring value to the Romanian society”.

A third domain with potential for Romania is, according to the founder of Fildas, the creativity. “We are capable of innovation, but we must encourage those with the talent and creative intelligence. But this requires a lot of attention with regard to how the government spends the funds from taxes and the European funds. For example, the French assigned 25 of the GDP for research and still they are dissatisfied. My opinion is, to check what each group of budget expenses produces, and if it does not provide something useful for the society, remove it”, thinks Anca Vlad.

Computerization for the state vs the computerization for the private sector

With regard to computerization, Anca Vlad thinks the state handles huge sums for a project which, in the private sector, would be made with much less. “I confess that I have some fears related to the launch of the 2020 project – I heard for example, that we need 5 billion EUR for the computerization of the country. These numbers are ridiculous, but I heard them uttered. The computerization should be developed in stages, because technologies change a lot. We need a project that will be achieved in phases and will look for the optimum version. We have some experience: We have 2.5 million loyal clients, we issue 6 million prescriptions in the whole country and 18 million receipts, and we know exactly when and what our clients purchased and we do it with IT expenses of under two million EUR per year”.

Anca Vlad has a pertinent opinion with regard to the cloud technology, that the state wants to implement “This cloud is not just a word, it is a pure marketing construction, regarding the storage of data, which is not made in the clouds, but here, on earth, in someone’s server. It is a European problem where the data are stored”. She thinks the government should have its own servers, on which to store the information. “We have our servers and we can not take on the cloud our information regarding the clients and the drugs.”

With regard to the health cards, Anca Vlad thinks the problems many have are not regarding their usefulness, as some try to project, but the fact that these cards greatly reduce the possibility for corruption in the health system. “Everybody has cards and if they can have cards with money, they can have cards with information about their health. The problem is different: this card greatly reduces the possibility for corruption. The control and computerization make a huge difference.”

The entrepreneurs would be helpful for the government

Anca Vlad thinks the government could learn a lot from the entrepreneurs from the private sector, if they would allow a dialogue, and she does not understand why, in these last 25 years, few governments and authorities really listened. “We have several platforms for internal communication, one is called the Road to excellence, where pharmacists can write. The write what they notice and, even if they remain anonymous, the information still reaches the managers. Some of the proposals can be implemented some can not, but there is a communication, someone reads these proposals. I whish that here in Romania we would have a real dialogue between the business owners and the authorities. We know what the market prices are for projects that the state wants to implement. They should just ask and listen to what we have to say.”

The culture of team work

She considers that the team work is the biggest problem in Romania today, at all levels, including the private sector. “This is a real problem, and it even happens in our company. But we have a course to solve the lack of team work, and I participated. The result was shocking. We had some contests, first individually, then by teams. The hierarchy changed: Those that had the best individual results, when working in a team, did not get the team to have better results. Those that were at the middle of the chart had the winning team. So it is not the personal qualities that decide but the team quality and the teamwork. Since then we only work as a team.”

In the personal field she has several pursuits, aside from the business. One of her pursuits is to support the Romanian art. “I think I will focus more and more on supporting women entrepreneurship. Now I have a child that must finish school, but later it will be easier to travel. I attended various conferences and I observed it is harder to travel in the country than abroad. It is harder to get to Iasi than to London, but I plan to overcome these challenges for a good cause, says Anca Vlad.

An expected book: Lean In – Sheryl Sandberg – Women, work and the will to lead

During the book festival Bookfest, that will take place at Romexpo during 20-24 may 2015, Litera publishing house will launch one of the most important books of this year – Lean In –Women, work and the will to lead. It is a bestseller authored by Sheryl Sandberg, the operations manager of Facebook, being considered an exciting read for the women that want a successful career, and for the men that want to better understand the contemporary business world from the perspective of their coworkers and partners.

The book has a foreword by Anca Vlad, one of the most successful entrepreneurs from Romania, and she knows, better than most, probably, the status of the career woman in the modern society. “We can not ignore the differences between the sexes, but they must be accepted and overcome. The equality is long overdue and we women must be the ones to achieve it. In every government, in every industry, there is a need for women as close as possible to the top of the pyramid. The support of men is essential – because they must have their part of the involvement in the family, to free some of the time of the women – but the society must also encourage them to do so. (…) With passion and determination we can change things!”, is how Anca Vlad shows her conviction on the foreword of the book.

Take a step forward!

Without being a radical feminist, Sheryl Sandberg tries with this book to set aside the prejudiced opinions regarding the life and choices of working women, offering practical advice on how to effectively manage their career and combine their professional success with personal achievement, showing, at the same time, to the men how to better support their partners, so that they both can win. A brave and encouraging impulse toward a better world.

“Sheryl offers practical advice regarding the management and overcoming of challenges that occur when climbing the career ladder. Lean In is a fascinating read, spiritual and full of significance for the women (and men) from all generations. (Condoleezza Rice, former state secretary of the USA)

Lean In joins Sheryl’s ability for compiling information with her skill in getting the best from people. The book will help all readers – especially the men – to become better leaders and more effective.” (Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO Facebook)

The book launch will take place on Saturday, May 23rd, starting with 17:00, at the stand of Litera publishing, from the Romexpo pavilion, and will be attended by Anca Vlad, and she will also give a speech.

Sheryl Sandberg announced that she donates all her revenue from the sale of this book to the Lean In foundation, a non-profit organization that encourages women to follow their ambitions, and other organizations that help women.

Catena at 15

This year, CATENA celebrates 15 years: 15 years since it has been part of your life; 15 years since its heart has been beating for you too! 15 is a beautiful age for a person, it tells so many things about one and one’s possibilities in life.

The CATENA that we know, the one that we have developed and raised at the same time as you have grown up keeps doing what it was meant to do since it was born: establishing connexions, bringing joy, being of help, bringing people together, cheering them up, making them stronger, more confident, more open towards life itself.
