18 for 2018: Business with the scent of a woman

One third of all shareholders in Romanian companies are women, according to statistics. The role of women in business is becoming increasingly important.

The wages of women managers in the European Union are 23.4% lower than men’s wages, according to Eurostat data. Moreover, a study by the McKinsey Global Institute shows that if women had the same role as men in the labour market, then world GDP would grow by more than a quarter, or 28 trillion dollars, until 2025. At European Union level, nearly 7.3 million people hold leadership positions, of which 65% are men (4.7 million) and 35% are women (2.6 million). In Romania, the percentage of women that are associates or shareholders in a company is about 40%. Data from the Trade Register shows that out of 1.2 million associates or shareholders in Romanian companies, 450,000 are women.

Women entrepreneurs have a different vision of developing a business than men, and their motivation is different from that of men. Most of the time, women pursue social goals and have visions that include a positive impact on the community. Academic studies argue that in Romania, women are more motivated to open a business because of the need for independence and professional fulfilment that they do not find at work, while men are driven by the need for control and challenges. Sociological studies also show that businesses run or owned by women are 14% more opportunity-oriented and initiative-oriented, 10% more focused on ethics and integrity, 9% more efficiency-oriented and effectiveness-oriented and 8% more active in employee development.

According to a 2017 Mastercard survey on female entrepreneurship, taken in 54 countries in the world, Romania ranks 28th, with only 25.3% of all women-owned businesses, compared to 30.8% in Spain, 29.6% in Poland and 27.8% in Hungary. The regulatory framework and entrepreneurship support programs seem to disregard the typical needs of women in general and in particular the needs of female entrepreneurs – the difficulty of combining family life and professional life, discouragement and mistrust, as well as sexist stereotypes, demonstrates that the collective mentality regarding the involvement of Romanian women in business is still under development. All women in leadership positions persevere in the competitive business world dominated by men. Through talent and ambition, they stand out as business leaders and even tycoons.

The most powerful businesswoman in Romania is undoubtedly Anca Vlad, who was ranked first in Forbes’s top 50 most influential women last year, for the first time. The founder of one of the most powerful groups has built a valuable business in about a quarter of a century. The Fildas Group, according to the latest data available on the website of the Ministry of Finance, had businesses of over 650 million euros in 2016 and currently has over 6,000 employees. In the highly competitive market of distribution and sale of medicine, the two percent annual growth in turnover, as was the case with the companies within the group owned by Anca Vlad, is a great performance. In addition, Fildas Trading and Catena Hygeia, members of the Fildas Group, are listed by the commercial credit insurance companies with the best financial rating in the field of pharmaceutical distribution and retail in Romania. In September 2017, Fildas Trading entered, for the first time, the Top 500 of the largest companies in Central and Eastern Europe, ranked by the consulting and economic analysis company Coface. Fildas Trading was immediately ranked 355th, the best of the eight Romanian companies that had recently entered the top 500. The business of entrepreneur Anca Vlad is not only focused on pharmaceuticals. Anca Vlad is the Honorary President of the Romanian Investors’ Board (PIAROM) and supports the arts in Romania through the Senso Contemporary Art Gallery and by supporting many Romanian artists.

Capital Magazine: The “ingredients” of Anca Vlad’s success

If in the field of politics, the number of women who build a successful career is steep, the situation is quite different in the business environment. And the fact that women can do business just as men is proven by the entrepreneur Anca Vlad, who own the Fildas-Catena group, states the business magazine Capital.

“The differences between business men and women are quite significant. The approach is different, and women tend to think in a more future-based manner. There, at the horizon, there are more risks than in the near future”, states Anca Vlad briefly, according to the journalists from Capital magazine.

In order to have an even clearer idea about the role women have today in business, Anca Vlad states that in the social and health sectors there is a percentage of female entrepreneurs of 64%, over the European average of 58%, as per the publication. And Romania ranks 5th pace in the European union in what concerns the weighting of women in the liberal professions and 8th place in what concerns management positions held in companies of over ten employees, with a national average of 41% compared to the European average of 35%.

“Thus, a positive perspective seems to appear, in what concerns female entrepreneurship and management, which we would like to see doubled by a similar evolution in the political environment, where the female presence is reduces. Specialists state that the lack of critical female mass in politics makes them copy the male behavior. This is why confrontation in thinking patterns and issue management is diminished, which does not benefit the development of efficient public policies”, continues Anca Vlad, quoted by Capital magazine.

A business managed with great passion

In an extremely dynamic and competitive pharmaceutical market, if you do not adjust to the challenges, you will not perform. And this is clearly proven by Anca Vlad, the founder of the Fildas-Catena Group, as demonstrated in an extensive article published in the latest print edition of the financial magazine Capital.

The first memories from the business world date back to 1990, when she established a marketing consultancy company. Briefly thereafter, she entered into the pharmaceuticals industry, after establishing Fildas, a decision which turned out, in time, to be very wise, state the journalists from Capital magazine.

„The figures achieved in the first eight months are as planned and they offer us the financial framework necessary in order to continue the Group’s business lines. “Romanians developing Romania” – a journalistic endeavour about the most important Romanian entrepreneurs

With its second edition, the annual “Romanians developing Romania” focuses once again on the strongest Romanian entrepreneurs, those who, by their business and brands, constitute points of reference for Romanian economic and social life.

“Romanians developing Romania” is an Intact Media Group project, which presents 100 Romanians and their business, which incur value to the national economy, thus having a decisive contribution to the development of this country.

“Talking about the people that have succeeded is vital to the health of society. Yes, they have succeeded in constructing something which, in the eyes of the majority, translates into fortune or fame, but, in fact, this is about a construction that contributes to the wellbeing of a larger group”, stated Alessandra Stoicescu, Executive Manager of the publication, in the editorial opening this publication.

This is not about the richest, nor about the most influential Romanians, but about those Romanians “who develop Romania through the workplaces they created, through the potential provided to the areas where they started their businesses, through the higher taxes they pay to the state in proportion to the turnovers”, according to the text substantiating this journalistic endeavour.

The substantiation of the journalists who put together the catalogue added: “We have discovered discrete entrepreneurs, upon whom an entire community relies. We have discovered entrepreneurs who, in the ruthless war with the multinationals, have won. And we have discovered entrepreneurs who pay monthly wages to thousands of people”.

The second most important Romanian entrepreneur, after the Paval brothers – the founders and owners of Dedeman, in the catalogue “Romanians developing Romania” is Anca Vlad, the strongest woman-entrepreneur in Romania. The journalists of Intact Media Group write about Anca Vlad that she has consolidated her position as a leader in the pharmaceutical retail sector, the companies she created totalling, in 2015, a turnover of 2.986 billion RON.

The main criterion in establishing the hierarchy of the entrepreneurs was the aggregate turnover of the businesses they conduct, according to the financial data available from the Ministry and Finance and the Trade Register, therefore the reference year was 2015. Only companies that are 100% Romanian were included, considering the shareholders, as well as the operations.

Anca Vlad – an entrepreneur and more

The journalists of Intact Media Group write that “Anca Vlad is, perhaps, the best-known business woman in Romania, the founder of the distribution company Fildas Trading, as well as of the Catena pharmacy chain, the market leader in the industry. After a considerable advance of business in the year 2015, Fildas Trading became, in 2016, the most important Romanian company in the pharmaceutical area, and one of the top five companies with domestic private capital. In the first year, the number of employees has grown by more than 100 persons, reaching 860, while the turnover exceeded 500 million euro, the most dynamic among all market players.

With such numbers, extension is the signal word. The investment plan of the company Fildas Trading includes the construction of a logistic centre at Iasi, the development of the logistic capacities in Bucharest and Cluj, as well as the extension and upgrade of the offices held in Bucharest.

The Catena pharmacy chain, the driver of the business, exceeded 620 units at country level last year, and the entrepreneur emphasized that this expansion still continues. The Catena brand was created in 1999, at the time when Filas Trading took over the majority of shares in the company Argesfarm.

(…)

Anca Vlad is also the founding president of the Local Investor Employers’ Association (PIAROM), in which capacity she actively promoted and supported several initiatives and projects oriented towards improving the business environment in Romania. Thus, PIAROM supported the first survey dedicated to the Romanian private capital, a study which indicated that the year 2015 was a historical year for the competitiveness of Romanian companies, which acquired profits of more than 40 billion RON, against the background of an aggregated turnover of 551 billion RON.

(…)

As First Vice-President of the National Confederation of Romanian Employers (CNPR), Anca Vlad has repeatedly stated the Romanian authorities should pay more attention to the domestic capital, as this represents the most important driver of Romanian economic growth.

(…)

Over the years, the companies established by Anca Vlad have become involved in ample actions for the prevention and information of the population, in activities promoting a healthy lifestyle, as well as in various social and relief campaigns. (…).”, according to the journalists who completed the catalogue.

Swimmer Paul Georgescu, champion of the Lake Zurich Marathon!

Supported by CATENA, the swimmer Paul Georgescu, the fastest Romanian to swim across the English Channel, has won the 30th edition of Lake Zurich Aquatic Marathon, SRI CHINMOY MARATHON-SCHWIMMEN 2017, which is considered to be the hardest contest of its kind in the world.

An honorary member of the Catena Racing Team, multiple swimming champion and record-holder for crossing the English Channel, PAUL GEORGESCU, supported by coach Matei Giurcaneanu and his team, was clearly ahead of his competitors in the category “without a wetsuit”.

Thus, Paul Georgescu swam continuously 26.4 km in 7 hours and 11 minutes, almost half an hour faster than the runner-up.

The Romanian sportsman will face a new challenge, on 15 October 2017: the OCEANMAN final (Benidorm, Spain).

GOOD LUCK, Paul Georgescu!
