Press conference of the Romanian Businesspeople Association (AOAR): The current personnel crisis could be solved by encouraging young mothers to return to work with half of the value of the benefit, plus the salary

Ziarul Financiar and TVR1 reflected an event organized in mid-July, by the Romanian Businesspeople Association (AOAR), whereby the entrepreneurs ask the government managed by prime-minister Mihai Tudose to adopt a set of measures encouraging investments and supporting the development of companies with Romanian private capital.

According to Mrs. Anca Vlad, Vice-President of AOAR, the current legislation on maternity benefit and leave (a benefit which is currently 85% of the net income, and the leave of up to 2 years) affects the companies’ business plans: “We are facing a personnel crisis which is emphasized by the fact that very many persons go on parental leave, with the elimination of the ceiling on the benefit granted to the mothers. We made a calculation, and if an employee with an income of RON 2,000 per month, who is granted a benefit amounting to RON 1,700, were encouraged to return to work for half of the benefit value, plus the salary, the state would gain over RON 600 per month, and also we, as employers, would be gaining.”

“We cannot change taxes all the time and play with them. We need to reach a decision, a good decision, and then to implement it and to know that we can count on it for 10 years”, Anca Vlad pointed out.

The measures proposed by AOAR also include the fiscal consolidation of the groups of companies with Romanian capital, so that they are granted the same fiscal treatment as the multinational companies, which consolidate their revenues in their mother countries. Such a measure could, according to the businesspeople, turn Romania into a regional hub for investments. Another proposition advanced by AOAR is the implementation of the reverse charge on VAT between companies, to eliminate VAT fraud.

Anca Vlad at “Bursa” Conference: The Decisions of Female Entrepreneurs Are Based on Both Intuition and Reason

BURSA newspaper organized on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, the 5th edition of the “Women in Charge – A Better World” FEMALE ENTREPRENEURSHIP Conference, in partnership with the National Association of Entrepreneurs. Anca Vlad, the Honorary President of the Romanian Investors’ Employer Association (PIAROM) declared in the event that Romania was in one of the top places in the European Union with respect to the number of female entrepreneurs and women in leadership positions in private companies.

She also mentioned: “There is this idea that women in leadership positions, unlike men in the same positions, are too focused on the emotional side. Research proves otherwise, however. The decisions taken by female entrepreneurs are more often than not based on both intuition and reason. The Romanian private sector has understood this aspect, our country being in one of the top places in the European Union regarding the number of female entrepreneurs and women in leadership positions in private companies.”

Nevertheless, the private sector continues to be an area that poses numerous obstacles for women, Mrs. Vlad added, mentioning that Romania is in one of the last places in the European Union in respect of women’s involvement in public life from decision-making positions: “We refer here both to parliamentary activity and to public companies.”

According to her, in the month of February we had approximately 616,000 female entrepreneurs, 454,000 of whom were shareholders/partners in companies and 162,000 were self-employed (PFA or individual/family businesses).

The percentage of female entrepreneurs in companies is around 37%, with a tendency to grow (even if a relatively slow growth rate, of around 1% over the last five years), Anca Vlad also added.

She stated that: “Surprisingly enough, the «engines» are not Bucharest or counties like Ilfov, Cluj or Timis, but counties in the South-East region of the country – Tulcea, Braila, Galati – with percentages of over 40%. In terms of start-ups, the situation is even more encouraging: 47.6% of start-ups have been founded by women, peaking in the South-East (54.4%) and West (56.6%) regions. 64% of the entrepreneurs in the Romanian health and social sectors are women, a significant percentage of 58% above the European average.”

At the same time, Romania is in the fifth place in the EU in respect of women’s share of the total number of professionals in the industries dominated by liberal professions, Mrs. Vlad said, adding that: “Moreover, Romania is in the 8th place in the EU regarding the percentage of women occupying management positions in companies with more than ten employees (41% compared to the European average of 35%). Meanwhile, Romania remains the European Union country with the lowest gap in wage between the men and the women occupying management positions in companies with more than ten employees.”

The founder of PIAROM also wanted to outline that we possess a high educational potential for female entrepreneurship: “According to the latest PISA surveys, Romania is among the 8 European countries (next to Finland, for example) where girls have obtained higher grades than boys in the Science subject matter.”

Women’s position in the private sector paints an encouraging image, outlining a perspective of development for female entrepreneurship, she concluded, adding that: “At the same time, women’s position in public decision-making situates us, in the European Union, in a shameful 3rd place at the bottom of the list, with only 14.2% women parliamentarians. Worse than us are only Malta and Hungary. Poland, a country which represents the European average, has a percentage of women parliamentarians twice as high. It should be noted that France, Sweden and Bulgaria have governments made up of almost 50% women. We believe that it is high time for the state to generate those public policies that could lead to a growth in women’s involvement in politics and in decision-making positions in state companies.”

Ziarul Financiar: Fildas Trading in the top drugs distributors

“The distribution company Fildas Trading, founded by Anca Vlad, entered the top three players in the market of drugs distribution, after last year has recorded a turnover of 539 million EUR, with almost 45% more than in 2015, according to the calculations of Ziarul Financiar.

“The investments in human resources came first, almost 100 people being employed for the development of the distribution and logistics activity. Now we have reached a total of 860 employees. A lot of attention was also paid to the development in the IT field, and the upgrade of the used ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning- e.n.) systems was completed. The logistics spaces were enlarged and reorganized in Pitesti and Bucharest and the fleet of heavy trucks was replaced and expanded”, said Anca Vlad.

Also, last year Fildas added another 1 000 pharmacies in the list of clients supplied with drugs, increasing both the range of cosmetics and supplements, as well as the pharmaceutical portfolio. Currently, Fildas distributes 11 000 different products.

“With an approved budget of 10 million EUR, a logistics center will be built in Iasi and the substantial expansion of the logistics capacity in Bucharest and Cluj shall be achieved. The capacity of the offices held by Fildas in Bucharest shall also be increased”, said Anca Vlad.

One of the challenges identified by Anca Vlad on the market where she operates is to supply the Fildas customers with all the required goods, the founder of the company showing that there are over 250 drug shortages, especially in the diseases of diabetes, oncology and transplant. “We advocate for the total transparency of exports and to have the main focus on the needs of the health system in Romania”, said Vlad that characterized the distribution market as a “dynamic and highly competitive” one.

After the first four players in the profile market announced their financial results from last year, Fildas climbs one position and ranks third among the largest distributors, passing in front of Farmexim. It is the biggest increase in turnover from last year in relation with the other players who held the top positions in 2015, according to the data announced so far.

Fildas Trading operates on the local distribution market for more than two decades after, in 1991, Anca Vlad founded the company. In 1999, the entrepreneur decided to establish Catena, who became the leader of the pharmaceutical retailer in Romania.

The two companies in the pharma sector have been doing business together for over 1.1 billion EUR, according to the calculations of Ziarul Financiar based on the results announced by companies. Catena registered a turnover of 572 million EUR last year, reaching a total of 620 pharmacies nationwide, up with 40%.”

“Capital” Magazine: The story of Anca Vlad, the woman who created “Pharmacy of the Heart, Catena”

In March, “Capital” magazine is publishing the stories of successful Romanian women. Every day, on the capital.ro website, you can find a story of a successful Romanian woman, extracted from the latest issue of Capital’s Top 50 Successful Women, which appeared at the end of last year. The story of Anca Vlad, founder of Catena, was published on March 3rd. Below, you have the full article that appeared in “Capital”:

„Anca Vlad is a successful businesswoman who opened the first Romanian business in the area of marketing. The company, currently known as the Fildas-Catena group, has become a market leader in the retail sale of pharmaceuticals, and Anca Vlad is a standard for Romanian businesswomen.

Anca Vlad discovered her passion for economics in high school. At that time, the teacher who was teaching her economics advised her to go to a specialized faculty, which is what she did. She attended the courses of the Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies. In 1980, thanks to the results she obtained over the course of the years and at the graduation exam, she has received a repartition to Bucharest, at a company in the lumber industry – the current Silvarom. The professional experience acquired in the seven years she spent working in the export of furniture – a field of activity where she rose to the position of the export activity coordinator -, would help Anca Vlad in the following steps in her subsequent life as an entrepreneur.

“My first mentor, during my career, was Andrei Menhardt, the then manager of Silvarom”, Anca Vlad recalls emotionally. “In my spare time and on holidays, I was working as a translator for international conferences and then as an event organizer for the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania (CCIR). This is how I met some people from many international drug companies, as chemistry was my specialty as a translator”, said Anca Vlad. In 1987, the opportunity to work for the CCIR arose, as national manager for a large foreign company – SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals, from England. In May of 1990, she establishes the first marketing consulting firm in Romania, and she hits the jackpot in the entire country with one of the first contracts. If you still remember the toothpaste commercial “Aquafresh in three colors”, then you should know that this slogan belongs to Anca Vlad.

A year later, she lays the foundations for the Fildas business, a firm that she started with only 7 employees. Nowadays, the Fildas-Catena group reached over 5,000 employees and a consolidated turnover of 452 million euros. How did she manage to build a top business? The answer comes directly from Anca Vlad: “The firm’s most important capital is trust. Actually, this is also our motto. It is a company where the relationship between our suppliers, us and our clients is based, first and foremost, on trust. We have a very good reputation both within our country, and abroad.”

Anca Vlad is very involved in the Romanian social and cultural life. In terms of supporting certain projects, Anca Vlad appreciates the effort of the teams Salvati Copiii/Save the Children, Light into Europe, OvidiuRo, Hospice Casa Sperantei/Home of Hope and Fundatia Renasterea/The Rebirth Foundation.

Anca Vlad’s passion, ever since she was a student, was and still is fine art. For 15 years, the Fildas Art Foundation organizes exhibitions of paintings, sculptures, ceramics in Bucharest, in other cities from within the country, abroad, sponsors valuable artists in the development of projects, she organizes annually the International Workshop of Creation from Eforie, she publishes albums and art catalogues and she hosts monthly, at the Senso Gallery, large-scale cultural events.

Anca Vlad, PIAROM: “Small and very small salaries represent the revenues of over 80% of the population”

“There are very many inequalities between our country’s developmental regions”, warned Anca Vlad, founding president of the Romanian Investor Employers’ Association (PIAROM), who declared: “I am much more uneasy now than I was before, concerning the short-term development possibilities. I knew, pretty much, about these inequalities, and I thought they could be settled by general development, however, this issue can only be settled by a front-end approach and specifically for every area.”

Within the presentation of a study regarding the workforce, Mrs Vlad brought to attention the fact the remuneration of the workforce is as follows, according to the data of 2016: 41.5% of total employees are granted a gross income of less than RON 1,350. According to the above-mentioned figures, in Vrancea 60.47% of the employees have such a revenue, which is “below the subsistence level”, in Maramures – 59.06%, in Harghita – 57.95%, in Suceava – 57.84%, and in Teleorman – 56.47%. “It is hard to accept”, said Mrs Vlad, adding that these are “realities”, as well as “opportunities” for the SMEs, since the entrepreneurs can find inexpensive workforce.

Anca Vlad also indicated that only 18.5% of the (full-time) employment agreements in our country have a gross value of more than RON 2,700, a level representing the average salary. “It is about the polarizing of revenues. “Small and very small salaries represent the revenues of over 80% of the population”, remarked the representative of PIAROM, stating as follows: “The most alarming information concerns the structure of the workforce, which incurs the fact that the number of contracts for unskilled workers grew by 8% in the years 2015-2016.”

“Accelerated growth is ascertained concerning the rate of unskilled workers, in relation to an alarming drop in the rate of skilled professions and specialists,” according to Mrs Vlad, who emphasized: “We have lost 8% of the super-skilled employment agreements: physicians, teachers, engineers. Very many economists are retiring, new ones do not emerge on the market. This means that, in the hundreds of thousands of companies that we have, and in the tens of thousands being established every year, we have no economists who can deal with the health of companies. We cannot, then, be surprised by the bankruptcies and by the other issues brought about by start-ups”.

Mrs Vlad also brought to attention the situation of the Classification of Occupations in Romania (COR), noting that the reduction of some occupations is in order, as well as the introduction of others in the list, to the purpose of updating it according to the requirements on the labour market.

Anca Vlad: “Romania is at a positive time”

On Wednesday, the 7th of December 2016, “Ziarul Financiar” (“The Financial Newspaper”) and the law firm Reff & Asociatii organized the event “10 years of business: explosive growth, the crisis, the new normality”. The event marked the 10-year anniversary of the above-mentioned law firm, a member a Deloitte Legal, and represented a chance to reflect upon the most important business events in this period and an attempt to anticipate some of the trends for the next 10 years.

The following were present in the event, as speakers: Anca Vlad – President of Fildas Group Vice President of the Romanian Businessmen’s Association, Lucian Croitoru –  , Counsellor to the Governor of the National Bank of Romania, Sergiu Manea – Executive President Banca Comerciala Romana, Siminel Andrei – Gen eral Manager NCH Capital, Andrei Burz-Pinzaru – Partner Reff & Asociatii, Omer Tetik – CEO Banca Transilvania, Martin Slabbert – Founder and CEO Prime Kapital, Alexandru Reff – Partner Reff & Asociatii.

“Romania is at a very positive time.” However, let us not delude ourselves about the future, for we have great workforce deficit, the massive exodus is an issue”, stated Anca Vlad, President of Fildas Group. “We have 35 counties without IT specialists, we do not have enough economists, only 70,000 employment agreements with economists, the trend of the excessive matters in education, the people who learn by heart. The best decision I made during the crisis was to reduce the list of customers to the ones who were very safe and serious and to achieve development on our own through the retail points. The entrepreneurs must resume investments. Legislation is complicated, there is a thicket of laws, I wonder what a foreigner can understand. If we solve this and corruption, the investments will come as well.”

The Christmas Tree Festival: Catena, standing by the side of Save the Children in the fight against school dropout

The 16th edition of the Christmas Tree Festival, an event organized by Save the Children Romania to the benefit of thousands of poor children at risk of school dropout, was organized on Thursday evening, on the 8th of December, within the Stejarii Country Club. The gala presented by Amalia Enache and by Mihai Bobonete was honoured by the presence of more than 300 personalities in the business environment, media, culture and sports.

Within the event, 14 Christmas trees were auctioned for charity, from the 27 that were exhibited, the most expensive being created by the famous fashion designer Catalin Botezatu & ARC Metropolitan School, purchased by Catena, through Mrs Anca Vlad, president of Fildas-Catena Group. Catena was also one of the main sponsors of the festival, in the Diamond category. The story of this Christmas tree is, in itself, the story of childhood and of the dreams that this is made of.

“The Christmas tree I created for this magical evening is one showing us childhood as it should be for every child: one of stories, honesty, and love. I am tremendously happy that the magic of the Christmas tree will get where it should, to the children who need it”, stated designer Catalin Botezatu on this occasion.

Gabriela Alexandrescu, Executive President of Save the Children Romania, emphasized that the purpose of the Christmas Tree Festival is to reduce school dropout. “”We would like to thank all the designers and the generous people who stood by our side. Without the generosity of our sponsors, this would not be possible. We would like to thank all the companies, designers, public persons and everybody who supports us and trusts that, together, we can give these children a chance to education and to a decent future”, added Gabriela Alexandrescu.

This year’s edition of the Christmas Tree Festival set a record, following the auctioning of the Christmas trees, as approximately 520,000 EUR was collected to prevent school dropout, from the raffle tickets and from sponsorships, which is the highest amount over the last ten years of this event.

Romanian Investor Employers’ Association – Survey on workforce analysis

The Romanian Investor Employers’ Association – PIAROM (president Cristian Parvan) launched, within a press conference, the Study on workforce analysis at the level of Romania’s development regions, for the year 2015. Anca Vlad, Founding President of PIAROM, Cristian Parvan, President of PIAROM, Dr. Mihai Cioc, Piarom member and Valentin Mihai Ionescu, State Secretary within the Ministry of Labour, Family, Social Protection and Elderly Persons were present for the event dedicated to the mass media, as well as to professionals in the area, to economists, sociologists, as well as businessmen. .

“The Romanian Investor Employers’ Association has, as its main objective, the provision of public information regarding the capacity of Romanian investors which, unfortunately, is ignored and underrated by the authorities”, stated Cristian Parvan, president of PIAROM. “The survey regarding workforce analysis at the level of Romania’s development regions, for the year 2015” is a sober analysis identifying the main coordinates of workforce structure in all eight development regions of the country, related to last year. Indicators which should be taken into account upon designing and implementing any public policy with an impact upon the business environment and regional development.

“The unskilled workforce grew by 8%, and this tendency shall also be maintained in the coming years. There is an acute deficiency of specialized staff in Romanian entrepreneurship stated Anca Vlad, founding president of PIAROM. “We have set IT as a country brand, but how many people work in IT? Is IT appropriate as a country brand now?”– asked Anca Vlad, since it is a well-known fact that half of the programmers in Romania work in Bucharest, whereas almost 40% are dispersed in Cluj, Timis, Brasov, Iasi, Ilfov, Sibiu and Dolj, which means that only 10% cover the remaining 33 counties.

CATENA – awarded a prize at the ZF Gala 2016

“Ziarul Financiar” (“The Financial Journal”) celebrated 18 years within a gala, where, as it has been doing every year, it joined together Romania’s business class, entrepreneurs, directors, managers, bankers, lawyers, consultants, both Romanian and from abroad. At the same time, ZF also celebrated 10 years from the Romania’s accession to the European Union, a period with many challenges, but also with results and successful businesses. 600 participants were present within the gala and, as it has been doing every year, the Financial Journal granted ten awards for the most valuable companies in the economy, and three special prizes: for the most spectacular leap over the 10 EU years, for the highest transaction registered in 2016 and for the strongest brand within the in pharmaceutical retail sector, CATENA.

Anca Vlad, founder of the Catena -Fildas Group pharmacies, who was present at the Gala, declared: “I would like to thank the Financial Journal, for the fact that it noted us. Upon seeing these young and very beautiful persons here on stage, I can only think about the particular quality of the workforce in Romania, as far as intelligence is concerned, as well as their presence and the desire to work. This is what I can tell you on a personal note. For 25 years now, we have been dealing with human resources issues, and I can tell you that the progress is becoming better and better, the skills are ever more complex and I am surprised whenever I pass by our buildings and I see that the lights are turned on, I do not understand why. I always strive to do things in such a way that people finish their work in due time, so that they may also have a personal life, but it seems that they are passionate, just I have been passionate about it.

We take pride in the IT sector, there are 30 thousand IT specialists in Bucharest, there are 9 thousand in Cluj, but there are 35 counties without IT specialists. We wanted to emphasize this matter, because we desire the computerization of Romania, and it can only be achieved if we treat all the areas of the country equally. I believe we have managed to do so. If you were impressed by this remark, I believe that we have managed to communicate something today. Thank you very much for this award. It really is a great joy.”
